Beginning/renewing a dance company is 2010

As promised the post--I will try my best to make it informative!

I read last week that a former dancer of mine is re-launching her company. Good luck in 2010, as money is hard to come by and businesses are closing up everywhere. But if it is destined to succeed, it will.
*this is one reason why I will not begin RDC**

First off, a business has the first seven years of hard and trying times--if you pass that 7 year mark, you have done well. {mine just hit the 8th year}.
As a dancer in this economy is extremely hard to make ends meet without a normal job - not dance or related. In order to have a company you need to have a savings, a fulltime lucrative income, or grants {if you are lucky}. Those are the three basic things I would say that a person needs to have. You cannot simply work as a dancer and/or a dance teacher and expect your company to work. It won't work. It can't. Think about it is murder to do this if there is not plan well thought out.

Secondly, I would say keep working and build a nestegg. You could also use real estate as a way of building a profit. Applying for grants are good--but there is alot of red tape to meet their specifications - not to mention you have to write the grant! A non-profit status is ideally the best bet - sadly, I have never chose to go that direction and have not the first clue of how to go about applying.

Thirdly, what is the money used for?? The basics of dancers pay/salary, costuming, rental space {if you cannot get it free}. Other points to ponder are the cost of choreographers {they worked and need to be paid--if they are a working professional}, theatre rental {s}, lighting and sound people, lighting designer, printing, music editing {if not using a pro-rather a computer program...mine were mostly professionally done}, office space {if not a home office, then you cannot write it off as a home office--see CPA for details}, and advertising.
Then the biggest thing is to add into the cost of each ticket what the sales tax is. If you sell tickets for a performance--then guess what, you are re-selling dance! I was lucky--I only sold one performance! All of the others were complimentry. Of course, my problem with dancers were never funding, I alsways had the money to pay. some even chose to resign before a show - no pay or not even ask for their check. But those are rare and only happened to me!}

Well, I hope this is a run down of what it takes to be in the buisness of running a dance company.

Forthcoming blog in May

In the beginning days of May, I will be writing my aspeccts of a dance cmpany in today's ecomony. It is very hard for an estalished company, much less a new {or re-vamped one} to get "in". This economic state of the US is the #1 reason why my company is not working at this time.
Keep an eye open for it!

Happenings.....

Currently the Rep Series is off--apparently, and old friend told me that I need to go back to the beginning and scrap the work and begin again. He's not a dancer--but an audience member, You Tube loyal follower ,and personal /business confidant. So, now, just working on pulling things together!
No auditions, performances, or new people are in the mix for a while!!

11 April 2010

Auditions cancelled

Sorry----again life has interfered! More later...Sorry to all of the people who were reading and gearing up for a dancing.

Repertoire Series......has returned

Beginning June 2010, Ms. Koon's Rep series will return. After a very hard 3 months, it will finally have its day. I went in to a new studio {ballroom} today for a meeting re: Dancer Enterprise and a place for classes. We go to looking around and asking millions of questions and I asked about holding show, concerts, and more. One thing lead to another and all ended great. He is a great business person and very easy to speak with. A plus.
So, more info will become available as soon as I have planned it.....but, you may visit the series site at: www.wendalkoon.webs.com

It will be a very emotional show for the simple fact that I have begun this year in not such a great place.

Changes for RDC

This is taken from the website {off of the main page}.

In 2010, RDC will be making changes to better serve our mission. In the past we have been asked if we are a Christian company, and I have said no. People asked because of the name. During the month of December, I begun doing charity work by means of dance and it has brought me spiritual prosperity....and things that would not been possible without asking for payment.
The coming year RDC aspires to bring in people who have something to tell, a reason to dance, and believe a higher power can give wonderful gifts to us ---if we believe in him.
Yes, our repertoire is not your average Christian work, but being a Christian is not being judgemental and accepting everyone.
A mistake RDC has made time and time again is accepting people who don't have something to share, and instead have something to gain. In 2010, we are opening the doors to people who share in our vision and goals, understand those, have their own stories to share, and more.
We welcome with open arms 2010!
As you can see we are striving to create a group of Christian people - which is ironic, because before teh name change the mission revolved around Christian principles. These changes are in place -- but the company is not ready to move forward. alot of personal issues {positive/negative} have come up in my daily life and RDC is not a priorty at this time. The website is up because you never know when opportunity knocks. It might strike in a different form in which you have yet to see to materialize, it might take you out of your currently city where you reside, anything.
Another blog just minutes away......

Executive Director

I have decided not to move on with a new director. The individual who applied lives in Detroit currently. Although, we both have ideas to share--its not the right time to move on.....
Another blog is forthcoming......

News

It is still very early, but in aquiring info, sending out resumes, and more I have found a individual who is intersted in the Executive Director position. I thought I was not ready to move forward--but no, I am not sure. So, RDC might have a new director....but...it is still very early to decide on anything.
In other news, I am attending an audition tomorrow. I have had a couple of friends send me their blessings.
